6/365: How we build and what we build will change soon

Went through this video on UX trends of 2023 with the team today and we focused on the emerging changes to how we build and what we build.

How We Build – as we develop better design tools that can perform effectively as WYSIWYG type interface editors and spit out code, UI design (and eventually UX design) starts to become more skill intensive. Designers will need to be much more methodical and systematic when building the screens, considering edge cases, putting in comments to explain design decisions for maintenance purposes – essentially playing more of the role of a frontend developer. Are we as designers ready for such increased rigour?

What We Build – technology has improved to a point where personalised interfaces for each individual can become a reality. What this means for UX is that we should be moving away from hardcoding design elements and instead focus on designing the relationship between elements, and leaving the actual choice of the elements (be it colour, font, size) to the user. We can finally break away from designing for an elusive “standard” persona and instead celebrate our differences – be it accessibility issues, internationalisation issues and just personal preferences.
