3/365: On control and gratitude

Work day looms, and I’m already a little behind schedule!

Interestingly, my daily introspection walk could not really keep out thoughts, plans and strategies for work – I had wanted to use the walk to contemplate more on the notion of powerlessness versus feeling in control but what kept tripping me up (besides the constant detours to think about work) was the notion that “control” is often but a false sense of security.

We don’t really control anything do we? We can say we “control” our choices to improve our health, but that can all come crashing down with some menacing disease.

I think what’s important then, is not to seek control but to practice gratitude – to acknowledge what has gone well and dwell it that, not worried on when it could or would evaporate or disappear.

Twinkle lights are the perfect metaphor for joy. Joy is not a constant. It comes to us in moments – often ordinary moments. Sometimes we miss out on the bursts of joy because we’re too busy chasing down extraordinary moments. Other times we’re so afraid of the dark that we don’t dare let ourselves enjoy the light.

A joyful life is not a floodlight of joy. That would eventually become unbearable.

I believe a joyful life is made up of joyful moments gracefully strung together by trust, gratitude, inspiration, and faith.
