7/365: On vulnerability

I realise the difficult of writing blog posts.

There’s a journalling aspect to this where it reflects your daily thoughts, mood and general attitude towards things. Some of the thoughts might be haphazard, half-baked or even outright misinformed, whereas others might be speak from a place of true vulnerability.

Yet there’s also a performative aspect to this, else I would have simply left it on like a word document. Truth be told, I want to engage others – partly for the attention, partly for the feedback. Nowadays our representation of ourselves to the world has been flattened into mere images, taglines or seconds of reels. It’s hard to put forth the real person and thoughts behind the images and I guess blogging is one of the better ways to do so.

But yes, vulnerability and performance is never an easy combination for anyone. You want to be genuine and show who you are – but because you cannot control the audience or their reaction, there’s a loss in the ability to image control. Hopefully I can struggle with this and fine tune what’s the voice and angle I want these posts to take, whilst still staying true to what I want to say.

  1. The conceit that underlies social media makes it challenging for anyone engaging to expose the full extent of their brokenness (this comment took awhile to conceive!). Appreciate you for attempting to bridge the gap.
